1 Kings 1: 6 (and his father rebuked him not at any time, saying, “Why Have you done this?”He is also very handsome. His mother bore him after Absalom.(NKJV)
_______________
INDULGENCE is the inability to resist the gratification of one’s desires and whims. It is a tendency to yield to one’s desires. When such a thing is granted by the parents then it has the potential to form children and grandchildren in a bad view. David’s son, Adonijah, was like that. His father, David, spoiled him to the point that he never questioned him about his actions. His father never made him unhappy.
This makes Adonijah grow up with some negative traits that ended up destroying him. Because he was left alone without parental supervision, control and advice. He was very proud, pursued his ambition to become king without consulting anyone and he used the resources at his disposal to lure people like Joab and some religious leaders like the priest Abiathar. (v5-10). This young man even requested for his father’s concubine which resulted in his death (2:16-23)
When parental indulgence replaces discipline, it will result in the complete destruction of the child. When parents fail to discipline their child and correct them according to scriptures now, they are inevitably programming their destruction tomorrow. Parental counsel, discipline and direction will cut off the rough edges of the child and help him to fulfill destiny. So parents don’t indulge your children. Discipline them today so they can be grounded in godliness and be useful to God and society tomorrow. Selah!
PRAYER: O LORD deliver me from indulging my children. Help me to train them and teach them the way of godliness in Jesus name.
