So a madman walks by

So a madman walks by—

Majestically.

Clothed in rags and ropes, tangled with filthy knick-knacks,

Trinkets of trash scrounged from every gutter he’s passed.

He’s crowned himself with a bag of dung

And drinks, from a goblet, piss-like fluid of questionable origins.

And he’s content—

More than content, he’s pleased.

Unaware of his sickness. Oblivious.

He lacks insight.

And so do we—so certain of our sanity—

Live life,

“To the full,” we say.

“However I wish,” we proclaim.

And it’s lost on us—the danger we are in.

Sin’s filth doesn’t make us cringe.

We tell lies without a flinch.

Immorality? Not a big deal anymore. No need to scream.

Corruption, cheating and theft have become our routine.

And our spirits are at peace.

Not horrified, not crying for help—

Content.

Content!

In fact, more than content—our dead and decayed souls are pleased.

Unaware of our sickness. Completely oblivious.

Lacking the smallest drop of INSIGHT.

So today, our prayer is simple:

Insight.

The ability to see that we are in the dark,

To recognize that our behavior is not as it should be,

To know that our hearts aren’t right.

Make us discontent in our delusion.

Lord, awaken our spirits; help us understand our true condition.

For only then can we open the doors of our hearts,

Reach out for Your light,

And embrace the soul-cleaning gift of Your sacrifice.

For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind and naked…..
